Happy Thanksgiving across the border!

October 9th, 2015

We may be across the border but we too like to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving. (Any excuse for turkey and gravy, eh?) For one thing, we are incredibly appreciative of the continued support of all our Canadians friends and family. For another, we have so much to be thankful for, this and every weekend, and we like to take every opportunity to count our blessings. For example, right now, we’re giving thanks for:

Warm weather

If you thought summer was long gone, you’d be wrong. Okay, okay, so it’s not exactly bikini weather, but we are very grateful for the lovely, balmy Fall days we’re currently enjoying. This weekend promises to be no different – 66 and sunny. Come on down and join us – we’ll be on the beach while the turkey is roasting.

Beach weather... almost

The grape harvest

Nothing says ‘Fall’ quite like a gorgeous grape harvest. We’ll be giving thanks for our Veranda Beach Vineyard bumper crop with a communal picking on Saturday morning – think of it as the vintner’s version of a group hug. We’d love for you to join us in the celebration!

When: Saturday October 10; Time TBC
Where: Veranda Beach Vineyard
Why: Grapes = wine. Now that’s something we’re very thankful for!

Happy Thanskgiving from Veranda BeachFree turkeys

What’s better than turkey dinner? Free turkey dinner! No, we’re not speaking gobble(dy-gook)! This weekend if you spend $150 at our local Oroville market, Akins Harvest Foods, you’ll get your turkey for free. Thank you, Akins!

Speaking of turkey, in 2013 Canadians ate enough turkeys to stretch, beak-to-tail-feather, from Regina to Fredericton… which they then drowned in enough gravy to fill a train 17 cars long! (Seems we’re not the only ones who love turkey and gravy with a grand passion!)

All turkey talk aside though, we do wish our neighbors a very happy weekend and many blessings in the year to come. Happy Thanksgiving!

Fabulous Fall

September 23rd, 2015

You could be forgiven for thinking that here at Veranda Beach we’re all about summer. After all, we do have the word ‘Beach’ in our name. It’s true. We do love summer. But when Fall sways gently into our forecast, bringing with it crisp air, crunchy apples, splendid pumpkins (and their partners in crime – pie!), and glorious grapes begging to be harvested and turned into wine, our hopeless devotion to summer wavers. Fall – and all its earthy rewards – beckons. We are no match for her siren call.

Veranda Beach Wine

‘Tis the season for foraging. And we do just happen to live in one of the most bountiful regions in the world. So whether your longed-for Fall finds lean towards fresh-from-the-earth produce at farmer’s markets (according to The Weather Channel, pumpkin is by far the most craved-for food in autumn); fantastic wines from our many local wineries; one-of-a-kind antiques; or even errant golf balls (there’s nothing quite like a round of golf on a crisp, blue-sky Fall day), you don’t have to venture far from Veranda Beach.

Take a leaf from our book and fall headlong into the beauty and bounty of the season with this list of fun Fall activities and events.

Celebrate the grape
Fall GrapesWith our own Veranda Beach Cellars harvest due to happen any day now, our thoughts are most definitely turning to sipping and savouring other fine wines that inspire us. Why not do the same and head out on a Veranda Beach Wine Tour of The Golden Mile and Black Sage Bench? We’ll help you discover local Okanogan wineries here south of the border and head north to the south Okanagan wineries in the heart of Canada’s wine country. (So don’t forget your passport!)
The time is also nearing for Oliver’s 21st Annual Festival of the Grape on October 4. You don’t want to miss this all-day event with 50 wineries in attendance, vying to please your palate with both wine and food. You can also participate in another Fall-centric event – the grape stomp – and a bunch (pun intended) of non-grape-related Fall activities!
As for the 35th Annual Fall Okanagan Wine Festival, which runs from October 1-11, well that offers up 160 events throughout the Okanagan… Now that makes for a fabulous fall into Fall don’t you think?

Fall BountyThe Fall trifecta: Fairs, Festivals and Farmer’s markets
If ever there was a season for fairs and festivals, it would be Fall. The weather is perfect for wandering about in wonder, collecting wonderful produce. A few of our Fall favourites include the Okanogan County Fair on September 24-27, a good old fashioned fair with great food and great fun; the Okanogan Harvest Fest on Saturday October 3, a fun day out jam-packed with events like a BBQ Cook-Off Competition, Pet Parade, Kid’s Activities and wonderful food (you can even offset all of Harvest’s waistline-expanding bounty by taking part in the Mid-Valley Hospital Autumn Leaf Run if you feel so inclined); and the Okanogan Family Faire on October 9-11, an annual three-day Fall feast of entertainment, music, food, artists and crafts.
It’s also time to take advantage of the last few weeks of the Okanogan Farmer’s Market, which runs until the last Saturday in October. Support our local farmers and artisans and spoil yourself with fresh and fabulous Fall fruits and vegetables.

Get garlicky
The saying may be ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’, but truth be told if you really want to keep winter sniffles and chills at bay, you need to make friends with garlic. Get this: a 2001 study published in the journal Advances In Therapy found a daily garlic supplement can reduce the number of colds by 63%. Of course, we prefer our garlic straight from the ground, in something delicious, perhaps even paired with a lovely little wine. And yes, we can have it all, thanks to the Garlic Festival at Hester Creek Estate Winery on October 3.

Make old new again
The art of antiquing is just that: an art. And if you have the eye for it, one man’s ‘old-and-dusty’ might just become your shiny new masterpiece! There’s plenty of spoils to be found in and around Veranda Beach if you’re of an antiquing frame of mind – you need travel no further than Tonasket to find everything from quilts to tractor parts and more. And the weather is just perfect for this grown-up Fall equivalent of the easter egg hunt.

Catch a falling leaf
Indulge in a dose of child-like fun and head into the woods for a spot of leaf-catching. Superstition has it that catching falling leaves in Fall brings good luck. Every leaf caught equates to a month of luck and happiness during the following year. Veranda Beach wine and deckIf our math is correct, catch 12 and you’re all set until next Fall!

Finally, if all this Fall activity and foraging sounds like just way too much effort we highly recommend just falling into a comfy seat and drinking in the sweetness of this season from your own veranda at Veranda Beach. Come to think of it, we think we just found the most perfect Fall activity of all.

Love the sense of community at Veranda Beach!

September 11th, 2015

K-Town is fabulous. It ain’t no Veranda Beach though.

We moved into a condo on Abbott St in Kelowna. It’s a great spot. Right smack dab where we wanted to be.

Abbott runs along the lake and is the most popular street in Kelowna for cyclists, joggers and strollers.

Thing is that Passers by seem surprised when I greet them.

Oh right, I’m in the city now, you don’t do that.

It sure ain’t the community we enjoy at VB.

It’s been another great summer and a lay at the pool day again today. Sneak away to the Beach
Eh!  Diner’s open weekends.

Washington We’re With You!

August 29th, 2015

While not in harm’s way at Veranda Beach, our hearts and prayers continue to be with the thousands affected by Washington’s wildfires this summer. We concur with Governor Jay Inslee that the Washington blazes have “burned a big hole in our state’s heart” and we marvel at the incredible outpouring of that same heart!

Largest Fire in History
The Okanogan Complex fire is the largest fire in Washington State history now encompassing some 300,000+ acres. The fire is being fought by more than 1200 firefighters from as far away as Australia and is only 10% contained.

Lives Lost
Three firefighters lost their lives as they battled with their teams to keep others safe. Our hearts and prayers go out to their families and loved ones. We cannot begin to express our thanks and appreciation for all firefighters everywhere who continue to put themselves at risk to keep our homes, county and own friends and families safe.

A Number of Washington Homes Lost
Again, while we are in no danger at Veranda Beach, the fires have taken many homes including the family home of one of our Veranda Beach Crew in the Tonasket area. They will need our help now, and for many days to come.

Despite the incredible sense of loss and fatigue, our county has come together in this time of need. From flying red balloons, filling small red wagons, hand painting rocks and preparation of personal care packages, to hundreds of thousands in donations to local businesses to look after our firefighters, we are #OkanaganStrong! Many of our Veranda Beach Crew assist daily with moving horses and helping out relatives and friends.

We are monitoring the fire situation and in touch with those coordinating assistance efforts to ascertain how we can best help.

If you wish to be of assistance in any small way, please contact Rhonda Hinkley, the General Public Liaison at 509-429-9328 or direct message her on Facebook. Furthermore, any organized groups that would like to join the volunteer effort in the many areas needed from the distribution center in Tonasket, please send your contact information via direct message to Rhonda on Facebook and a volunteer coordinator will contact you. “We have only been into this for a little over a week and we have a long way to go,” reports Rhonda. “Any help to ‘spell’ our faithful volunteers and give them a break would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for all the outpouring of support and prayers we are experiencing!”

Summer at the Beach despite the Wildfires
In spite of some pretty smoky days at Veranda (and throughout the Okanogan), life carries on at the Beach. Over the last two days visibility has improved greatly and Homeowners and Guests are at the beach, on the lake, in the pool, playing volleyball, on the golf course and some dedicated fitness buffs are even out cycling and jogging again. The forecast is for improved conditions in the days ahead.

Another great way to help is to continue to visit our beautiful state of Washington, to support our local businesses, and aid in economic recovery. While we are most certainly #OkanoganStrong, we welcome all the support offered by neighbors far and wide. And thank you for it with all our hearts.

Long, Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer…

August 8th, 2015

Time may be flying everywhere else, but not at Veranda Beach.  Here, you can still enjoy Nat King Cole’s long, lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer… those days of soda and pretzels and beer…

Nat King Cole's lazy, hazy, crazy, day so fsummer are still available at Veranda Beach
as well as milkshakes and burgers and fabulous Veranda Beach Cellars wines…

You see Veranda Beach is about a simpler time, a time wear blackberries were just a fruit (are they even anything else now actually?), a time where kids ran barefoot with unbridled freedom, only coming home when they were hungry or it got dark.

Veranda Beach is about community as well.  About impromptu potluck barbeque parties and bocce on the green space until dark, and “Go to my Den” (today’s version of “Kick the Can”) after dark.

Check out the Screamin’ Good Deals and join us at Veranda Beach.  Like Nat King Cole, you’ll wish that summer could always be here.

Spring Cycling, Hiking and Golf… oh my!

March 16th, 2015

Yes, just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Veranda Beach spring vacationers have so many activities to choose from…

Ian MacLeod and Ross McGaw cycling from Veranda Beach

Road cycling is all the rage right now, however this appears to be no fad, but a sport with staying power;  and the Okanogan County delivers fabulous road biking routes with Veranda Beach as your base.  Both serious cyclists and leisurely riders will enjoy the backroads of the Okanogan.   Penticton’s Ironman cycling route through Canada’s South Okanagan popularized that race, and just across the border in our Okanagon County,  you will find the same spectacular scenery of vineyards, orchards, rivers and lakes, only with roads far less traveled, and thus perfect for road cycling from Veranda Beach!

Jude Brunt at the top of Cactus Mountain at Veranda Beach

Hiking at Veranda Beach has proven a most popular activity over the years with three trails to choose from, and each varying in difficulty and aptly named.

  1. The Beach Trail is a fabulous, easy, partly shaded walk along the Beach, perfect for families with small children.
  2. The Lakeside Trail is our moderate trail, climbing in elevation, to take in spectacular views of the Resort, Veranda’s Vineyard and Lake Osoyoos.
  3. The Cactus Mountain Trail is, as it is named, a mountain trail, climbing up beautiful Cactus Mountain overlooking the Resort, Lake Osoyoos and surrounding mountains and once at the top, the view is seemingly endless stretching south to Tonasket and north to Oliver!

Paul Doherty tees it up at Oroville Golf Club - 10 minutes from Veranda Beach.
Golfers can start their stick swinging spree at our local Oroville Golf Course, hop across the border to play Osoyoos, Inkameep Canyon or Fairview Mountain, or head South just an hour to take in Washington’s newest course quickly climbing the ranks, Gamble Sands.  There are over 10 area golf courses to choose from!

Add in a kite flying with the kids,  casting a fishing line right from our Veranda Beach dock or at one of the nearby mountain lakes,  touring the local wineries, and of course, time to relax,  and you’ve got the makings of a fabulous Spring vacation!

Many thanks to our previous Veranda Beach models Ian McLeod, Ross McGaw, Jude Brunt and Paul Doherty for permitting the sharing of their photos!

Most Content at Veranda Beach by Karina Alibhai

April 28th, 2014

As part of Karina Alibhai’s university application, she was asked this question….

Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?

And here is her reply…

As you drive down the winding road, the bright colored dots gradually grow into small cottages and the sun creates a golden glow behind the mountains as it reflects off the shimmering lake. As you continue down the lane, you see families sitting in their verandas chatting over a meal, kids playing a game of tag on the grassy field, boys racing their bikes across the road and grandparents watching their grandchildren play in the water from their beach chairs in the shade. Everything here is perfect, from the 1950s-themed cottages to the sunset over the lake. But what makes this place so special is the sense of community, the unique lifestyle and the family memories.

Karina Alibhai & her brothers at Veranda Beach – Easter 2014

Every family has a tradition.  Our family tradition is driving five hours to Lake Osoyoos. And while a five hour drive may seem long or boring to some, it is one of the highlights of the trip. Being together in one car and having conversations, playing car games and telling jokes is the best start to our vacation. The journey is perhaps as memorable as the destination – Veranda Beach.

When a family comes to Veranda Beach, they don’t just come to a beach resort.  They go back in time to when life was simple and they become part of a magical community. Whether families have been coming here for years or this is their first visit, the lifestyle at Veranda Beach is unique. People stop and say hello to one another on the beach, bikers have the right of way on the roads, the cottages remain unlocked at all times and most of all, there is a feeling of happiness and contentment which is contagious at Veranda Beach.

I have noticed that regardless of how busy my family is or how stressed my parents are, when we come to Veranda it is like everything is lifted off our shoulders. There is a sense of peace and we are all relaxed. While there are still the occasional arguments and pranks, everything has a loving touch to it.

The weeks go by so fast, and by the end of the summer my brothers and I are almost in tears because we don’t want to leave the place we call our second home. Coming to Veranda Beach is not a typical vacation. Our days consist of working out, playing games, having long, intellectual conversations over meals, reading books, playing sports, completing homework, watching movies and bonding with one another. The life here provides us with something we lack in the real world – balance.

My favorite part about Veranda Beach, however, is being with my family. While we do have the occasional fight, I love my brothers and my parents; they have always been my number one fans. As we sit around the table talking about current events, cuddling around the small fire not saying a word, or laughing at one another for being silly, the love that we have for each other becomes crystal clear.

I am the happiest at Veranda Beach because my family is the happiest when we are there. Hearing the laughs, seeing the smiles and simply being together are the highlights of my summer. Veranda Beach brings out the best moments and creates our best memories. It is where I feel most content.
