Unlike other seasonal transitions, the arrival of Summer is a heralded celebration! Officially, the first day of Summer is June 21st – the longest day of the year! Ask anyone when the first day of Fall, Winter or Spring is and they may be hard pressed to tell you – however almost everyone can name the first day of Summer! Shortly thereafter is the eagerly anticipated last day of school for families, some having counted down from as far as twenty days to the true commencement of Summer holidays! And then it’s long weekend fun for the entire family with Canada Day and Independence Day Celebrations on July 1st and July 4th. It is now time for Summer at the Cottage and freedom – Veranda Beach style!

Our Veranda Beach Crew is taking the Beach to Seattle and Vancouver next week. Well not the sand per se, nor the cottages, the vineyard or abundant amenities, amidst 300 days of sunshine a year, but a great slide show presentation on “What’s New at Veranda Beach” for 2012 and an outstanding offer to test drive “Life at the Beach”.

Close to 100 anglers turned up for the 8th Annual Molson Ice Fishing Festival last weekend in Molson, WA. The day began with the community putting on a delicious pancake breakfast in the Grange Hall. Then it was off fishing to compete for hundreds of dollars in prizes on Molson Lake, which is just a mere 20 acres, and Sidley Lake, a bit larger at 100 acres but its depths only reach 12 feet. At 4pm everyone gathered back at the Grange Hall for the prize presentation. However, for the second year in a row no one had caught a single fish! So after a great Italian style dinner all of the participant’s tickets were put in a barrel and with a thunderous applause, one by one each of the prizes were drawn.
Now that’s a Fishing Derby! Don’t miss next year’s festival you might catch the first fish…in three years!

With the dawn of a New Year, so came resolutions for many. Exercise more, stop smoking and eat healthier were undoubtedly popular choices with which are being grappled now some thirty days later. Our resolution… to live slower, and yes, we too have been challenged.
Veranda Beach was built to encourage living slow. The vision began by reminiscing events of the 1950’s – an age of innocence and simplicity. A time when Blackberries were just a fruit, children’s laughter echoed as they played with real sticks rather than joy sticks, and friends connected face to face rather than through facebook. Veranda Beach takes us back in time – a welcome reprieve from the pace of the 2010’s.
Living slow at Veranda Beach is easy when you are on vacation, with many becoming so completely relaxed they forget what day it is. Living slow amidst already busy reservation phones and preparations for the 2012 season requires a conscious effort.
Our keys to living slow amidst today’s pace… savoring your first cup of coffee, a daily walk along the beach and lakeside trail, lunch on the boardwalk rather than at our desk, having the entire family around the dinner table and doing what you love on the weekends!
Cheers to living slow in 2012!

It took 18 pickers helping out over two days to bring in this year’s grape harvest at Veranda Beach – a whopping 9.5 tons! And not only is it a plentiful bounty; Veranda’s soil, vines and the tender care of our Vineyard Manager Finis Hale and his crew have yielded the finest grapes in the Okanogan County. 2011 will always be remembered as a year of vintage quality.
Father David joined our vineyard harvest crew again this year to ask for God’s blessing; the fine results of last year are about to be bottled and this year’s bounty - 3 1/2 times last year’s crop.
The grapes are now in internationally acclaimed Winemaker Rusty Figgins hands as he begins to craft them into fine wines for our ultimate enjoyment.

You know, we’ve hosted seven wine weekends at Veranda Beach, only last weekend was not a formal wine weekend – it just happened. And like all spontaneous undertakings – it was superb!
Joined by Joyce Wegner – Chief Editor for Wineries Refined and her son Warren, we toured four local Oroville wineries: Copper Mountain at Taber’s Taste of Summer, Esther Bricques, Lake Crest Winery, Okanogan Winery and then had the rare pleasure of a barrel tasting of Veranda Beach’s own 2010 Barbera with Winemaker Berle “Rusty” Figgins. Our quest – to select one wine from each of the local wineries to sell at Veranda Beach General Store and to introduce Joyce to wines from the other Okanogan. When one thinks wine, the Okanagan area of British Columbia immediately comes to mind (along with Napa, Sonoma and Niagra) and the Okanogan area of Washington is somewhat of an extension of its’ northerly cousin, boasting superb whites, interesting reds and amazing ice wine. Our pics… Copper Mountain 2006 Chardonnay, Esther Bricques 2006 Ice Syrah, Lake Crest 2007 Merlot, Okanogan 2009 Gewurtztraminer and Veranda Beach 2010 Barbera (although it is still in the barrels). “twas a truly delightful sampling the rich bounty of the Okanogan area!
Our afternoon of wine touring concluded with a reception in one of the new vineyard cottages at Veranda Beach overlooking Lake Osoyoos and the vineyards from which we had just sampled. Just like good wine, vacation resort communities have a tendency to come into their own as time ticks by. As the plan comes together and the vision unfolds, things also tend to get a little more comfortable and laid back. And the finer things in life – like good wine! – take on a greater role. The Vineyard Cottages at Veranda Beach offer the rare opportunity to own in a working vineyard complemented with the Vintner’s Table wine program.
We added a little golf the next day and discovered poolside heaven with a glass of cool crisp Okanogan Pinot Grigio in the thirty degree weather. The sunshine has been a long time coming and we welcomed its warmth. The warmth of the day continued into the evening as we joined Veranda Beach Winemaker Rusty Figgins for his third annual Winemaker’s Dinner.
“A Vintner’s Journey through Latin America” commenced with Pisco Sour Cocktails from Peru and Pacific Salmon Ceviche on the Boardwalk, followed by Green Gazpacho Soup with grilled lime and cumin spiced sour cream – a cold soup and my husband’s absolute favorite in the warm temperatures, paired with a 2010 Casillero Del Diablo Carmenere from Chile. The first course & my personal favorite – Seared Tuna with a 2010 Don Miguel Gascon Malbec from Argentina, followed with Pork Two Ways – Red Chimichurri Tenderloin and Baby Back Ribs paired with a 2008 Juanico Don Pascual Tannat Reserva Roble from Uruguay – a definite crowd pleaser! And for desert, a spiced molten lava cake with Tavi Tequila Anejo – a truly unexpected pleasure. It was an evening of great food, great wines and great company, complemented with Jazz Operation offering latin inspired music so enticing that even winemaker Rusty Figgins was drawn to the drum kit for a song or two. It was a perfect summer night at the Beach and the Globe at the Beach staff did a terrific job.
We walked through the vines the next morning with our miniature australian shepherd, thankful for a wonderful, unexpected and forever cherished wine weekend at Veranda Beach!

Last Night was Texas night for the Tsawwassen Reunion Gang of five families from Vancouver! Even the adults were all decked out. The night prior was Caribbean night and a Mexican, 50′s and White Trash night are still to come!
It’s the Tsawwassen Reunion Gang’s first time to Veranda Beach, having discovered it through a friend that owns a family cottage at Veranda Beach. Historically the Gang went to Tofino, however, no more as they are loving it at the Beach and they’ve already booked again for next year!
Veranda Beach is the perfect place for reunions of family and friends!
