Veranda Beach is about to get Greener…

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

8 large shade trees plus 13 native trees & shrubs greener to be exact. Veranda Beach will get more colorful as well with native wild flowers. All thanks to the sponsorship of thirteen Veranda Beach families.

Chinese Elm Shade Tree in Veranda Beach's Village

Veranda Beach cottage owners and guests will partake in the 1st Annual Arbor Day Planting taking place next Saturday, April 23rd at Veranda Beach. Under the guidance of Veranda Beach Crew horticulturists John and Tree Kiesecker of Plain-N-Simple, LLC, 8 – fifteen foot large shade trees will be planted along Veranda Drive and the beach front and the 130 one foot starts of native trees and shrubs will planted around the common areas and trails for all to enjoy. Forever homes will be found for 10 bird and butterfly houses and a custom blend mix of wildflower seeds will be sown along the “wild shoreline” and Cactus Mountain.

Each large tree planted at Veranda Beach next weekend will grow to provide shade, animal and bird habitat such as the 50 year old Chinese Elm in the Village and EACH tree will absorb approximately 10 pounds of air pollution annually.   While there are no additional Chinese Elms being planted next week, Tree Kiesecker cherishes this old tree from when the land housed a dairy “as it appears that perhaps when the tree was young, a cow may have stepped on it contributing to it’s unique shape”.

Keeping within the many shades of green soon to be added at Veranda Beach, Dan Ogden, a Veranda Beach cottage owner, has been working with the Methow Valley Recycle Program and the County to launch a recycling program at Veranda Beach.

Veranda Beach is clearly a community working to minimize its’ own environmental impact, as well as benefit the greater community of Oroville and the Okanogan Valley.

An Exciting Year Ahead…

With the loonie breaking through par and a full on season of events and activities just around the corner, the Veranda Beach reservations crew is being run off its’ feet. GM Claus Larsen advises to “book early to avoid disappointment”.

Veranda’s Vineyard – Blessed with their Inaugural Grape Harvest

Friday, November 5th, 2010

October 12, 2010 will forever be marked as Veranda Beach Vineyard’s inaugural grape harvest.  Seventeen gathered at 8 am as Father David asked for God’s blessing of the bounty and the inaugural nine acre harvest began.

It was a day of celebration for Vineyard Manager Finis Hale who so lovingly tended to the vines through the growing season.  “Our harvest is complete, the grapes are crushed and the growing season has come to a close.  The grapes now are in a state of transformation.   As Winemaker Rusty Figgins delicately performs the art of crafting grapes into wine, we have no other choice but to wait for the complete bounty of the harvest.   As I reflect upon the season it reminds me of all the gifts God has given us.   As stewards of these gifts we will cultivate and produce the finest wines available in the Okanogan valley.   We will capture the audience of two nations, and all will be awestruck at the flavors we lay upon the palate.  Our first harvest hasn’t come easy, from wild creatures to learning curves, however with perserverance we prevailed.   I would like to take this time, to thank all who participated in the harvest.   And to Father Dave who gave his time, to ask for Gods blessing in our bounty. And for those who were unable to come, we missed you. This was a great time of fellowship with our peers and I look forward to this new tradition next season.”

Winemaker Rusty Figgins  replies “The human interaction required to perform the transformation from grape to wine is merely a gentle coaxing into the correct direction.  One knows that it all began in the vineyard, and the very high quality of the grapes that we harvested is a testament to Finis being constantly conscientious about the grapevines’  health.

Father David’s appearance to bless the harvest was a touching reminder of our purpose here, and a sign of something great coming from our collective effort.  I hope that the grape harvest blessing begins a fine vintage tradition at Veranda Beach, the like of which is found at many famous wine estates all over the world.

Thank you very much to Jude and Paul for providing coffee, Finis for the doughnuts, Lisa for even more coffee and for her gourmet-quality chili at lunchtime.  Thank you to all for the opportunity to share the season’s best moments with you!

The wine is indeed well on its way, as 5230 pounds (2.615 tons) of Barbera grapes were lifted by hand into the de-stemmer this morning, having been first subjected to the chilly night-time temperatures, aiding in achieving optimum processing condition.  The juice is highly concentrated and flavourful, with great acidity and sweetness.  A deep garnet hue was immediately apparent as the tank was filled with the newly crushed grape must.  My aim is to create the finest Barbera ever made in either side of the border, and our very special site will allow us to lay claim to that honour.

Allow me to also extend a word of thanks to all who helped or even just wished that you could have  helped with this year’s grape harvest.  Your support is enjoyed immensely!”

Veranda Beach has what’s hot…

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Hot temperatures, stunning beach, new wine program, vacation rentals and hot cottage real estate offerings!

Just like good wine, vacation resort communities have a tendency to come into their own as time ticks by. As the plan comes together and the vision unfolds, things also tend to get a little more comfortable and laid back. And the finer things in life – like good wine! – take on a greater role. Of course, there’s always incredible excitement and anticipation in the things yet to come. But watching new projects come to life, experiencing new events and social activities, and seeing the smiles on new and familiar faces, well, that’s an awesome thing to be a part of. Welcome to Veranda Beach.

A 50s-themed waterfront resort community snug on the pristine shores of Lake Osoyoos, Veranda Beach can be exceptionally pleased with how far it’s come in just a few short years. In 2000 the gorgeous spit of land where Veranda Beach is situated – highlighted by a stunning mile-and-a-half stretch of beautiful private beach – lay empty. That is, until the owners of Legend Resorts discovered it. They realized very quickly they had something very, very special on their hands. In their words, “We felt like archaeologists unearthing a rare treasure,” says Jim Hammond, President.

Fast-forward to 2010 and so many incredible things have transpired. Veranda Beach is now home to 110 beautiful and spacious lakeside cottages (and, yes, they all have large verandas to enjoy!), a village centre, a general store, a diner, a marina with plenty of boat, jet-ski, and paddleboat rentals, and so much more. There is a vibe here that’s bound to win you over. It’s reminiscent of yesteryear when summer vacations were simple, neighbourly affairs, packed with fun and something you looked forward to all year.

And the vibe is only getting stronger. Bigger and better things are at hand for this one-of-a-kind resort community. Exciting new events are being planned. Exciting new vineyard cottage ownership opportunities now available. A wine program including Veranda Beach’s private vineyard, is underway. A new restaurant – Globe at the Beach – is open for business. An 18-hole championship golf course is part of the vision for the future. When it’s all said and done, Veranda Beach will be a 900-hundred acre slice of lakeside heaven. (Of course, everyone who’s been there would say it is already!)

“The vision for Veranda Beach is quickly moving forward. And with plenty of passion!” says General Manager, Claus Larsen. “Typically, when people visit Veranda Beach for the first time they’re absolutely ‘wowed’ with this place. On the surface, it looks too good to be true. But then you stay here for awhile, settle in, and realize Veranda Beach is the real deal. And you’re hooked.”

Unquestionably, wine lovers will have no problem settling in to the lifestyle at Veranda. Great wine – thanks to the “Vintner’s Table” initiative – will be a big part of things here. The program, which will be available to everyone (not just cottage owners at Veranda Beach), features intimate dinners, wine tastings, and much more. Believe it or not, the first grape harvest at Veranda’s Vineyard takes place this fall and the first of many – Veranda Beach wines will be bottled. Additionally, one of the most exciting aspects of the wine program is the recent announcement that esteemed Washington winemaker, Berle “Rusty” Figgins, has come on board to preside over Veranda’s vintages and lead the resort’s wine program.

Tying into this new resort experience with elevated wine program privileges and benefits, are the new Vineyard Cottages at Veranda Beach.  Nestled amongst the rows of Barbera and Sangiovese grapes, these stunning cottages will have sweeping views of the lake and exclusive access to the resort’s Vineyard Pavilion amenity – private tasting room, wine cave, swimming pool and more.

Interestingly, Greg Ashley, President of Colliers International, recently spoke at an Okanagan Urban Development Institute luncheon where he noted cottages, are and will be the exceptionally “hot” product sought after by those looking to purchase recreational property. And, to top it off, when they are enhanced by wine programs, they are attracting even greater levels of interest, noted Ashley. You want to get in on what’s “hot?” Veranda Beach is the answer!

Of course, if your desire is to be right on the beach, you’ll be happy to know that a few lakeside cottages – starting in the $300′s – are still available at Veranda Beach. Close to the marina and the central village, the lakeside cottages are just the ticket if you want to be close to the action and a hop, skip, and jump from the beach.

Not surprisingly, fun-loving people, both young and old, will have no trouble keeping busy at Veranda Beach. Swimming (in the lovingly-maintained outdoor pools and hot tub!), beach volleyball, kayaking, bocce ball, water-skiing, lake trampoline, jet-skis, paddle boats, outdoor movies, plus many special events such as music nights, dances and extraordinary wine and culinary events; the list of fun things to do is extensive, to say the least.

So, really, the short of it is this: Veranda Beach has what’s “hot.” From the most attractive resort real estate ownership opportunities to the best beach around, Veranda Beach has got what you want. This is a resort with a vibe that’s really coming into its own. Take a stroll down the beach and see the smiles, you’ll see. www.verandabeach.com

Long Weekend Fun at the Beach!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Wine, italian cuisine, & sunshine were enjoyed by all at Veranda Beach as the Canadians descended upon the Beach for their Victoria Day holiday weekend. Children’s laughter echoed as they swam, scooted, kicked balls, flew kites, and built sand castles, only to be outdone by their parent’s enjoyment of the “Italian Job” Dinner and Wine Pairing on Saturday Night. Globe at the Beach Chef Michael did an outstanding job and the Barbera pairings selected by Winemaker Rusty Figgins were exceptional. I honestly do not think I have ever had better Tiramisu! Three days felt like a week’s vacation as I laid poolside yesterday savoring my last few hours at the Beach before returning home to my work week, content that it would only be four more sleeps until I was back at the Beach again!

Terrific Season Opener at Veranda Beach

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Veranda Beach’s season opener was enjoyed by all this past weekend under blue skies and sunshine. “Globe at the Beach” attracted the most attention, opening with rave reviews of Chef Michael’s first offerings. Fantastic food (the ribs are amazing), fabulous new lunch and dinner menus and a terrific Mother’s Day Brunch. The Veranda Beach General Store opened with a bang as well, chalk a block full of new surprises and selling out of a few items on its first weekend. The warm weather also welcomed the Resort’s first waterskiiers and wakeboarders on Lake Osoyoos and of course the kids were in the pool! With all the events planned it’s shaping up to be a great summer at Veranda Beach.

New Restaurant & Enticing Events Calendar

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Veranda Beach has a new restaurant – Globe at the Beach- as Jude Brunt and Paul Doherty owners of Globe Café & Tapas Bar at Big White and Sun Peaks, join the Veranda Beach Crew on Lake Osoyoos to open Globe at the Beach this weekend. Those who have come to love the previous 1950’s Diner style menu as part of your summer at Veranda, need not be alarmed as Globe will continue to offer great onion rings, an awesome burger, homemade authentic milkshakes and the infamous rootbeer float! But your dining choices will be further enhanced with the addition of fabulous Italian specialty coffees to start your day, and a more extensive, great tasting lunch and dinner menu inspired by the cultures and cuisines of the owner’s travels – full of fresh, fun and creative summer comfort foods all cooked from scratch using the best local ingredients. Globe will also offer daily chefs special creations, a wider selection of local boutique wines and beers and many culinary theme events featuring cuisines from around the world.

Wasting no time, Globe at the Beach will bring forth international flavours from England, Italy and Atlantic Canada in three culinary events in May. Upon opening the doors on Saturday, Globe at the Beach extends an invitation to the English custom of afternoon tea for Mother’s Day, followed by Mother’s Day Brunch the following day. Two weeks later it’s off to Italy for “An Italian Job” Winemaker’s Dinner on May 22nd with a five course Italian cuisine and wine pairing dinner, showcasing Barbera varietals from both the old and new world, and soon to be produced from the Veranda vineyard. And a week later, it’s Celtic Lobster Fest. You gotta be here.
