Fabulous Fall

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015

You could be forgiven for thinking that here at Veranda Beach we’re all about summer. After all, we do have the word ‘Beach’ in our name. It’s true. We do love summer. But when Fall sways gently into our forecast, bringing with it crisp air, crunchy apples, splendid pumpkins (and their partners in crime – pie!), and glorious grapes begging to be harvested and turned into wine, our hopeless devotion to summer wavers. Fall – and all its earthy rewards – beckons. We are no match for her siren call.

Veranda Beach Wine

‘Tis the season for foraging. And we do just happen to live in one of the most bountiful regions in the world. So whether your longed-for Fall finds lean towards fresh-from-the-earth produce at farmer’s markets (according to The Weather Channel, pumpkin is by far the most craved-for food in autumn); fantastic wines from our many local wineries; one-of-a-kind antiques; or even errant golf balls (there’s nothing quite like a round of golf on a crisp, blue-sky Fall day), you don’t have to venture far from Veranda Beach.

Take a leaf from our book and fall headlong into the beauty and bounty of the season with this list of fun Fall activities and events.

Celebrate the grape
Fall GrapesWith our own Veranda Beach Cellars harvest due to happen any day now, our thoughts are most definitely turning to sipping and savouring other fine wines that inspire us. Why not do the same and head out on a Veranda Beach Wine Tour of The Golden Mile and Black Sage Bench? We’ll help you discover local Okanogan wineries here south of the border and head north to the south Okanagan wineries in the heart of Canada’s wine country. (So don’t forget your passport!)
The time is also nearing for Oliver’s 21st Annual Festival of the Grape on October 4. You don’t want to miss this all-day event with 50 wineries in attendance, vying to please your palate with both wine and food. You can also participate in another Fall-centric event – the grape stomp – and a bunch (pun intended) of non-grape-related Fall activities!
As for the 35th Annual Fall Okanagan Wine Festival, which runs from October 1-11, well that offers up 160 events throughout the Okanagan… Now that makes for a fabulous fall into Fall don’t you think?

Fall BountyThe Fall trifecta: Fairs, Festivals and Farmer’s markets
If ever there was a season for fairs and festivals, it would be Fall. The weather is perfect for wandering about in wonder, collecting wonderful produce. A few of our Fall favourites include the Okanogan County Fair on September 24-27, a good old fashioned fair with great food and great fun; the Okanogan Harvest Fest on Saturday October 3, a fun day out jam-packed with events like a BBQ Cook-Off Competition, Pet Parade, Kid’s Activities and wonderful food (you can even offset all of Harvest’s waistline-expanding bounty by taking part in the Mid-Valley Hospital Autumn Leaf Run if you feel so inclined); and the Okanogan Family Faire on October 9-11, an annual three-day Fall feast of entertainment, music, food, artists and crafts.
It’s also time to take advantage of the last few weeks of the Okanogan Farmer’s Market, which runs until the last Saturday in October. Support our local farmers and artisans and spoil yourself with fresh and fabulous Fall fruits and vegetables.

Get garlicky
The saying may be ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’, but truth be told if you really want to keep winter sniffles and chills at bay, you need to make friends with garlic. Get this: a 2001 study published in the journal Advances In Therapy found a daily garlic supplement can reduce the number of colds by 63%. Of course, we prefer our garlic straight from the ground, in something delicious, perhaps even paired with a lovely little wine. And yes, we can have it all, thanks to the Garlic Festival at Hester Creek Estate Winery on October 3.

Make old new again
The art of antiquing is just that: an art. And if you have the eye for it, one man’s ‘old-and-dusty’ might just become your shiny new masterpiece! There’s plenty of spoils to be found in and around Veranda Beach if you’re of an antiquing frame of mind – you need travel no further than Tonasket to find everything from quilts to tractor parts and more. And the weather is just perfect for this grown-up Fall equivalent of the easter egg hunt.

Catch a falling leaf
Indulge in a dose of child-like fun and head into the woods for a spot of leaf-catching. Superstition has it that catching falling leaves in Fall brings good luck. Every leaf caught equates to a month of luck and happiness during the following year. Veranda Beach wine and deckIf our math is correct, catch 12 and you’re all set until next Fall!

Finally, if all this Fall activity and foraging sounds like just way too much effort we highly recommend just falling into a comfy seat and drinking in the sweetness of this season from your own veranda at Veranda Beach. Come to think of it, we think we just found the most perfect Fall activity of all.

Veranda Beach Cellars Wine Bloggers EventThis weekend Penticton is holding the Wine Bloggers Conference, an international event of all things wine and blogging! Veranda Beach Cellars had the pleasure of hopping on the bus in Chelan and taking over for a wine tasting and 3 course paired lunch for the next two hours until the bus dropped us back off in Oroville, WA.

Trisha and myself served a delicious 3 course paired lunch prepared by the Breadline Diner which included:

Picnic Melon with Fresh Basil
Cantaloupe, honey dew, grapes, and watermelon tossed with honey and basil
Paring: 2012 Lakehouse

Spring Green Salad
8th Street spring greens, spinach, cucumbers, carrots, c’rasins, almonds and feta with rhubarb vinaigrette
Paring: 2012 Regatta Rose

Italian Chicken Sandwich
Grilled Chicken, salami, provolone with Italian dressing on rosemary bread
Pairing: 2010 Collage
Lavender Shortbread Cookies

Meanwhile Rhonda, Veranda Beach Cellars’ Wine Associate extraordinaire, explained to the group of bloggers from all over the United States and Canada about Veranda Beach and our 3 award winning wines! It was such a treat to meet influential wine bloggers with such experienced pallets and share the Veranda Beach story with them!

That leg of the excursion wouldn’t have been possible without the help from the Lake Chelan Valley Wine Association, as well as our family at Veranda Beach, including Katy Perry, Veranda Beach Cellar’s winemaker (also the owner and winemaker of Tildio Winery in Manson, WA), who has crafted our 3 award winning wines and Finis Hale, Veranda Beach Cellars’ Vineyard Manager, who carefully watches over our grapes all year long! Last but not least, a huge thank-you to the Bloggers for their attention, patience, questions, and compliments on our wines!

We had such a fantastic time and we cannot wait to have some of the bloggers join us at Veranda Beach for a true 1950’s experience!

Veranda Beach Cellars 2010 CollageCrafted from selected barrels, Veranda Beach Cellars 2010 Collage has unmistakable personality and balance that stems from the artful blending of 70% Barbera, 20% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Katy Perry notes “the old world techniques used in the making of Collage offer up the feeling of opulence. It is exceptionally persistent, a blend for the most discerning palate and best enjoyed with good friends over a good meal”.

Veranda Beach Cellars wines are produced in such small quantities that we must offer it on an allocated basis. Join our Veranda Beach “Cellar Club” Wine List now to receive your allocation when it is released in May 2013.

Girl’s Getaway Weekend

Thursday, May 31st, 2012
Wine with friendsNikki’s story… My typical day starts out by waking up before the sun has even had a chance to peak over the horizon just so that I can send a few extra e-mails before it’s time to wake up my children.  Those few minutes in the morning are the calm before the storm as once my kids are up my day really starts rolling.  Just as I’m about to close my computer I get an e-mail from Susan, my best friend from the second grade.  I could tell this was important because she didn’t even bother with the usual courteous ‘Hello, long time no talk…’.  Instead she jumped right into it, “June 8th-10th, You! Me! Julie! and Lee-Anne!  We’re going to the Girl’s Getaway Weekend at Veranda Beach!”  Instantly I thought to myself, not a chance, between my family, my career and housework it’s hard to even find a moment in the day for myself never mind an entire weekend!  Susan, who obviously knows me too well, knew it would take more convincing then that so she continued to tell me about the weekend. “I know what you’re thinking a whole weekend away… Not going to happen!  Let me put it to you this way there are 365 days in a year and all I am asking is for you to take 2 1/2 of those 365 days for yourself.   She did make a good point; I mean it is only 2 1/2 days I’m sure my family could manage without me.
I was just starting to think about it but my bags were by no means packed. She then went on to say, “I know I spoke to your voice of logic, now let me tell you about all the fun were going to get into!  We’s start the trip off right with ice tea, beef jerky and Shania Twain en route to Veranda Beach, and then we’ll get into some wine.  As soon as we get to Veranda Beach we get a welcome bottle of wine in our lakeside cottage and an invitation to a wine reception (when I talked to Julie on the phone this is where she instantly said YES!).Wine by the Water
What a way to unwind on a Friday night, then on Saturday, the crew  at Veranda Beach Resort has set up a healthy breakfast, followed by a energizing hike, or we can play a round of golf.  (Susan knows I love to golf and rarely get time for it), or maybe try our hand at scrap-booking.  She had me at golf.  Saturday afternoon we can watch the poolside fashion show and shop at the boardwalk boutique as we sip on our complementary cocktails!   As for the evening we have our choice of a wine pairing dinner at the Globe, the regular menu or could barbeque at our cottage and then take in a “chick-flick” by the pool.   Sunday morning we will be partaking in the lakeside yoga as Lee-Anne has always wanted to try it. If I haven’t convinced you yet well I’m…I’m not sure but this is exactly what us girls need!”
She honestly had me convinced long ago, I can just imagine myself laying by the pool with no kids, no baseball, soccer or dance, no e-mails to check, no dinners to cook, no clothes to fold. My only worries would be friends, food, fashion and FUN!  Plus I think I deserve a weekend with my girlfriends to refresh and replenish!  Now I can hardly wait to catch up with the girls over a few glasses of wine!
