Our house specialty…The quintessential Veranda Beach Rootbeer Float!

Summertime brings back memories of my grandmother making us the quintessential root beer float. She always made these in those clear glass beer steins or fountain glasses that she'd pre-chill in the freezer. Another secret is to make sure the root beer is very cold when you make these floats, or the ice cream will melt too quickly. We’ll even share our recipe with you.

INGREDIENTS: (Serves 4)

  • 4 scoops super-premium ice cream (Haagen-Daz is a favourite - especially the Vanilla Bean)
  • 16 oz. bottle root beer

PREPARATION:

Pour about 1/2 cup root beer into the bottom of each glass. Carefully add one scoop of ice cream to each glass, then fill the glass with more root beer. The glasses will probably overflow - that's part of the fun!

TO SPICE THINGS UP:

Those of legal drinking age may want to add the following to each glass to kick things up a little:

  • 1/2 oz Vanilla Schnapps
  • 1/2 oz Root Beer Schnapps

(both of course best added when super-cooled in the freezer before-hand)

FINISHING TOUCHES:

For an added fun, top with whip cream and a cherry

EATING/DRINKING INSTRUCTIONS:

Sit back on the Veranda of your favourite cottage at the beach, kick your feet up and eat slowly, starting with the cold frozen foam on top, scooping ice cream and root beer together with your spoon, then drinking the creamy, caramel colored root beer at the end. For further indulgence, repeat as necessary, making sure to share with friends and neighbours alike!
